A very brief history:
Ballet originated in the 15th century in the Italian Renaissance courts. The Noblemen and women of the time when attending events were treated to elaborate displays of music and dancing. By 1661 a formal dance academy had opened in Paris and twenty years later ballet had moved to the stage. Classical ballet reached new heights in Russia in the 19th century, with Neo-classical ballet beginning to rise in the 20th century. Modern dance has now seen a rise in contemporary ballet.
